Percival Scientific and OXMAN Collaborate to Create Beautiful Climate "Capsules"
Neri Oxman, designer, inventor and CEO of OXMAN, proposed a partnership with Percival Scientific to custom-build four identical climate-controlled rooms called “capsules” for the future-focused design studio and laboratory her company was constructing in New York City. These climate capsules are unlike anything Percival Scientific has created before and required a redesign of nearly every chamber component.
In addition to their stunningly elegant appearance, the capsules feature movable 8-color LED panels, a modular interior for attachments and shelving, robotic technology, an extended temperature range and advanced software that can replicate historical climates. Their remarkable versatility allows the OXMAN lab team to conduct diverse experiments across many disciplines.
“I don’t think I’ve seen anything in my career that comes anywhere close to this amount of collaboration.” – Dan Kiekhaefer, Vice President of Engineering, Percival Scientific
Percival Walk-In Rooms Expand Bee and Wasp Research Opportunities
Professor Amy Toth and her research department at Iowa State University tried conducting behavioral experiments with native bees and wasps in a semi-controlled environment. However, the insects’ high mortality rate led to unreliable results. In response, Toth and her colleagues invested in Percival Scientific walk-in rooms with tight controls, colored lighting and diurnal cycling.
“Now that we have the Percival chambers, we're really excited because the stability of the conditions is way beyond anything we've had access to before, so having that degree of precise control really opens up a lot of opportunities for new experiments that we wouldn't have been able to do before.”
Cornell University and Percival Scientific Collaborate to Win LEED Gold Certification
“Percival was willing to look at nontraditional design. They were able to meet all the specifications set forth in our proposal. We desired chambers that could achieve our high standards to control temperature, reduce energy costs and leave no environmental impact ... Percival Scientific delivered on all our requirements and then some.”
